Baltic Porter is sometimes called the Piwowarski Skarb Polski (Piwowarski Treasure of Poland). What is the origin of this term and how relevant is it?

The Dark End of the 20th Century

You can read about the history of Baltic porter here, now we are interested in one fragment of it. Polish breweries have always been able to brew Baltic porters, these beers enjoyed recognition not only in Poland but also abroad. Michael Jackson’s book “Great Beer Guide” from 2000 included 500 classic beers from around the world, which according to the author should be tried. There was only one beer from Poland, of course Baltic porter. The turn of the 20th and 21st centuries was a time of brewery closures in Polish brewing. Takeovers by large brewing corporations, cost optimization. One brewery after another disappeared, and with them, other interesting beers disappeared from store shelves. Such as Grodziskie, which disappeared from the market in 1993 with the closure of the brewery in Grodzisk Wielkopolski. Fortunately, Grodziskie has returned after years and is doing better and better. But other beers were disappearing, the market was getting poorer and poorer, dominated by fairly uniformly tasting light lagers. In 2004, we reached the point where in the whole of Poland, Baltic porters were brewed by only 7 breweries: Nakło, Łódź, Witnica, Strzelec, Żywiec, Ciechanów and Brok.

Article by Andrzej Sadownik

In the same year, the article “Baltic Porter” by Andrzej Sadownik appeared on the browar.biz portal. If we were to point out the person who had the greatest influence on the development of interest in home brewing in Poland, it would be Andrzej Sadownik. Home brewer, creator and co-founder of the Polish Home Brewers Association. The article describes the history of the creation of Baltic porter, describes the characteristics of the style, tips on how to brew it at home. And at the end, there is a statement: “I propose that Polish Baltic Porter be recognized as our “National Brewing Treasure”. And since we can’t really count on large breweries, we should give it special care by the amateur movement of home brewers.”

The brewing treasure of Poland today

We can say that Baltic porter is a specialization of Polish breweries. There is no other country where so many breweries brew Baltic porters. And what is worth emphasizing is that both the largest and the smallest breweries, including contract breweries, do it, the vast majority do it at least decently, and some even phenomenally. So today the slogan “Baltic porter is a brewing treasure of Poland” is more relevant than ever.
