Some facts about style

Baltic porter is very different from other porters. Unlike English porter, also known as brown porter, and American porter, known as robust porter, Baltic porter is a bottom-fermented beer.

The best classic Baltic porters have 20-22 Plato, there are also imperial versions, i.e. stronger ones, which can have over 30 Plato.

Kormoran Brewery

The Kormoran Brewery has been operating in Olsztyn since 1993. Their offer consists mainly of light lagers, but they are also famous for their low-alcohol beer 1 in 100, which caused a real sensation on the market at one time and is still remembered as one of the beers that started a new wave of NoLo beers in Poland.

The apple of their eye are of course Baltic Porters. From the classic Warmiński Porter (21 Plato, 9% alc), which is one of the icons of the style, a beer to which other Baltic Porters are compared. It also comes in special versions, whether matured for longer, or with the addition of oak cubes or cherry juice. There is also Cornus Lupus, an ultra-strong (36.6 Plato, 10.5% alc), long-boiled porter with the addition of dogwood fruit. An exceptionally tasty drink, very thick and rich.

However, when thinking about the Kormoran brewery and Baltic Porters, the first association will be one – Imperium Prunum. This imperial (26 Plato, 10.5% alc) porter, long-matured with the addition of dried plum – Suska Sechlońska, caused a real revolution when it debuted in 2016. It is still the highest rated Baltic Porter in the world according to the RateBeer portal, it is one of the icons of style, an absolute classic.

Mazurski Browar

Browar Mazurski has been operating in Ełk since 2016. When looking for a location for the brewery, they chose a region with rich brewing traditions – Masuria. They focus on selling around the chimney and classic styles, sometimes with a touch of fantasy, such as Farmhouse with pine shoots. They are distinguished by the fact that all their beers are saturated with nitrogen, not carbon dioxide. It is also interesting that they are the only ones in Poland who regularly brew Red Ale style beer.

Mazurski Porter brewed since 2018 is a classic with a twist, 20 Plato and 9% alc, with the addition of oat flakes and cocoa beans. It is one of the few Baltic Porters saturated with nitrogen, which allows it to build a unique texture and foam. It won the brewery two medals at international competitions: gold at The European Beer Challenge in 2021 and silver at the Lyon International Competition in 2024.

ReCraft is a brewery operating in the Silesian Świętochłowice since 2014, initially as the Reden brewery. In 2016, they changed their name to ReCraft. From the beginning, they offered a wide range of styles, and were not afraid to reach for less popular beers such as Milk Stout or Rauch Weizen.

ReCraft Brewery treats Baltic Porter as it should be, royally. Their first Baltic Porter – Mentor was poured in unique, specially imported bottles and packed in decorative boxes. The next editions: Mentor II and Mentor III received a more classic packaging, but they definitely defend themselves in taste. Mentor III from 2024 was available in three versions: classic, with the addition of cranberry and aged with oak chips from bourbon and cedar.
